INSIDE THE BOX

Inside the Box was exhibited during the 2019 Stetson University Senior Thesis Exhibition in the Hand Art Center. The pieces are composed of 54 wood paintings, cut and rearranged into a total of 8 pieces. The inspiration for this work was the idea of unseen movement. There is movement around us constantly that we do not see. This project aims to represent this movement and energy through layered patterns. We are constantly told to think "outside the box", but I feel to truly understand the world around us we must bring it inside ourselves, inside our box, our mind. Hands represent human interaction, and the faces represent how that individual is interacting with the space they are in. Energy may stop at the edge of a human, move around it unbothered, or emanate from them. The boxes spin, so that when a viewer interacts with the work they are creating what is being represented, sound and movement by a human hand. The wall pieces represent how those energies can interact on the same plane, whereas the box shows the difference between planes.
